Teaching Kids about Thanksgiving
To be completely honest, I always find Thanksgiving a challenging time to be a parent.
We’ve all definitely been taught a sanitized version of the history of Thanksgiving, and the true history of the holiday is one fraught with war, violence, and colonization.
It’s incredibly hard to reckon with the way that we celebrate Thanksgiving today. For Americans, it mostly involves football, feasting in excess, and forgetting about the true history of the harvest season in early America.
When we speak with our children about Thanksgiving, I find that we separate the history and the modern into separate entities.
We teach the real history, while we refer to the modern Thanksgiving holiday as merely a reason to come together with family and friends.
How to Use a Thanksgiving Word Search

So in designing this printable Thanksgiving word search, I left out a few of the usual words (pilgrim, Indian, and so on) in favor of more historically accurate words like colonists and Wampanoag.
I also included some words that your children will be familiar with in reference to their own celebrations, like turkey, stuffing, and tradition.
One of my hopes is that this simple printable will help kick off conversations within your family or classroom about the real history that led to this holiday.
I also do truly hope that this Thanksgiving, if you celebrate, you find yourself among family and friends to celebrate with.

I just had to share my experience at this fantastic spot where I indulged in some of the best sorbet I’ve ever tasted! The ambiance is so charming, making it the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a sweet treat. I opted for the raspberry sorbet, and it was like a burst of summer in every spoonful! The flavors were vibrant and not overly sweet, which made it incredibly enjoyable. I also appreciated how the staff was friendly and knowledgeable, eager to help me choose the perfect flavor. They even offered samples, which was a great way to try a few before making my decision. After savoring my sorbet, I left feeling refreshed and satisfied. If you find yourself in the area, do yourself a favor and stop by for some sorbet ice cream. You’re in for a real treat!
