Make a Narwhal Puppet Toy
Transform an egg carton into an adorable narwhal puppet! This little marionette toy is a fun project to make with your kids, and will provide many hours of creative play.

Your home is a treasure trove of supplies just waiting to be used! Cardboard boxes, empty containers, and old newspapers can become works of art with a little time and creativity.
And that’s just the case with this sweet little narwhal puppet! You can turn a simple item into a DIY toy that will encourage creative play all summer long.

Making Things Out of Cardboard
I’ve always loved upcycling, and when our kids got old enough to help me with upcycled projects we created lots of other kid-friendly DIYs as well!
Next time you find yourself with an empty cracker box, try out these cardboard satchels. Or turn old cardboard tubes into binoculars!
We’ve also made an adorable circus train, and a classic car – all out of cardboard.

Supplies You’ll Need
- Egg carton
- Craft paint
- Paintbrush
- Low-temp glue gun
- Embroidery thread
- Popsicle stick
- Pen
- Scissors
- Wood bead
- Needle

How to Make A Kids’ Narwhal Puppet
- Cut the flat top from an egg carton and roll it into a tube; glue it together to hold. Also cut one cup from the egg carton.
- Flatten one end of the tube and glue it together lightly. Cut a diagonal strip off of each side of the flattened end. Also flatten the single cup and glue lightly (this will be the whale tail fins).
- Paint your whale body and tail.
- Sew the tail to the body with a wood bead in between (this helps the joint stay flexible). Use your embroidery needle and thread to sew through the egg carton material.
- Cut the narwhal horn shape from the egg carton and paint as you wish.
- Gently curve the base of the horn and glue it onto the body. Draw a smile and an eye on each side of the tube.
- Cut a piece of blue paper to create the spout. Roll the spout into a graduated tube shape. Cut fringe on one end and roll the fringe back to create the effect of water spouting. Glue this on as well.
- Use needle and thread to sew a string from the tail end and a string from the top end of the body.
- Attach the strings to either end of a popsicle stick to create your marionette puppet.

Have Fun!
Now you can set up a little cardboard theatre and your kiddos can create stories and shows!
Make multiple puppets for a family of narwhals, or make other sea creatures too. I love that puppet toys like this little marionette encourages them to think creatively and work together to tell a story.
Have fun! xoxo

Just wanted to share how proud I am. My son successfully made the narwhal puppet from an egg carton and had an absolute blast doing it! He loved getting creative with the paints and string, and now he’s been putting on puppet shows for the whole family.
Nice post and absolutely outstanding. You can do something much better but i still say this perfect. Keep trying for the best.
